Summary
gemini-cli is an open-source, Apache 2.0-licensed AI coding agent that connects a terminal session directly to Google's Gemini models, run as a command-line tool installed via npm, Homebrew, or npx. It's built for developers who work from the shell rather than an IDE, offering built-in tools for file operations, shell commands, and web fetching, plus MCPMCPModel Context Protocol, a standard for connecting AI applications to external tools and data sources. A compatible server exposes capabilities an assistant can use through a common interface. support for wiring in custom integrations. Beyond one-off coding tasks, it supports subagent orchestration, session export and replay, and a persistent auto-memory scratchpad for carrying context across sessions, features aimed at practitioners running longer or repeatable agent workflows rather than quick queries. The project moves fast and is clearly active: 762 contributors have made nearly 12,800 commits in the past year, with the latest of eleven tracked releases landing just two weeks ago.
An open-source AI agent that brings the power of Gemini directly into your terminal.
What does this codebase actually do, and where are the pieces I need to change?
reads the files and shell output in the working directory directly from the terminal session and answers or edits in place, without a round trip through an IDE or a copy-pasted snippet
How do I get a fix applied across a set of files without hand-editing each one?
takes the instruction, makes the surgical edits itself using its file and shell tools, and reports which files it touched
Can I hand off a multi-step task and pick up the result later, on another machine or after a restart?
exports the session to a file and re-imports it elsewhere, so the working context and history carry over instead of restarting from a blank prompt
Which of my tool calls are burning tokens across a chain of agent-to-agent requests?
surfaces usage metadata for each agent-to-agent call so consumption can be tracked call by call instead of only as a session total
Did the last session actually run the risky shell commands I was worried about, and were they blocked?
runs shell command safety evaluations against the commands it executed and reports which patterns were flagged
What did the agent learn or decide in a previous session that it should carry into this one?
keeps a persistent auto-memory scratchpad that stores extracted context between sessions so later runs start with that history instead of from scratch
