Summary
Kiro is a commercial AI coding agent, run as a desktop IDE, that lets developers direct one or more coding agents against their own codebase instead of writing every change by hand. It supports custom agents defined in Markdown with scoped tool permissions, hot-reloading agent and MCPMCPModel Context Protocol, a standard for connecting AI applications to external tools and data sources. A compatible server exposes capabilities an assistant can use through a common interface. configs without losing conversation history, and hooks generated from plain-language descriptions to automate lint checks or notifications. A companion CLI and web interface extend the same spec-driven workflow to the terminal and browser, where agents can plan across multiple GitHub or GitLab repositories and open pull requests unattended on a schedule. It's aimed at developers and teams who want agents embedded directly in their editor and version control rather than a separate chat window. Pricing runs from a Pro+ tier at $40/month up to Power at $200, with releases shipping roughly weekly since its 2025 launch.
How Kiro helps
Which parts of my codebase can an agent touch without asking me first?
checks each requested action against the capability-based permissions rules, prompting for consent on anything unapproved and remembering the decision as a workspace or global rule for next time
Can I let a teammate's agent definition loose in my repo without it inheriting my personal setup?
reads the agent's Markdown file and its tool-access tags in isolation when the opt-out setting is enabled, so it skips the steering files, skills, and AGENTS.md it would otherwise inherit by default
Did the change I just made to an agent or MCP config actually take effect?
reloads only the affected MCP servers immediately on save and keeps the running conversation intact, so there's no restart to lose track of
Is my automated dependency PR still running on the rules I think it is?
runs each schedule in its own sandbox clone, and any edit to the automation only takes hold on its next scheduled run, so the last completed PR reflects the prior configuration
How do I redirect an agent that's already halfway through a task in the wrong direction?
takes a queued or immediate correction message and applies it at the next tool boundary without cancelling or restarting the current turn
Which turn in a long agent session is where things went wrong?
lists every turn with the tool calls, files touched, commands run, and messages inside it, so a branch point can be picked out without replaying the whole conversation
