It reduces separate passwords and centralizes account and access management. platform supporting OAuth2OAuth2An open authorization framework (RFC 6749) that lets a service grant limited access to a user's resources on another service without exposing credentials, giving cyber tools a standard way to authenticate against third-party APIs., SAMLSAMLA standard for passing signed identity assertions between a sign-in provider and an application. It lets a user sign in through their organization's identity provider., LDAPLDAPA protocol for querying and modifying directory services, standardized under RFC 4511, commonly used to look up users, groups, and attributes in corporate identity stores like Active Directory., RADIUSRADIUSA networking protocol for centralised authentication, authorisation, and accounting of users connecting to a network, maintained under IETF standards. Cyber tools use it to integrate with existing enterprise identity infrastructure., and SCIM, designed for self-hosting.

Summary

authentik is an open-source identity provideridentity providerA service that authenticates users and supplies identity information to other applications. It is the sign-in authority behind many single sign-on systems. and single sign-onsingle sign-onSingle sign-on, using one identity provider to sign in to multiple applications. It is self-hosted, deployable via Docker Compose for small setups or Kubernetes and AWS CloudFormationAWS CloudFormationAn AWS service for declaring cloud infrastructure as code in JSON or YAML templates, letting cyber tools provision and tear down entire environments reproducibly without manual console steps. for larger production clusters, and it speaks OAuth2/OIDCOIDCOpenID Connect, a sign-in protocol built on OAuth 2.0. An application uses identity information from a trusted provider instead of maintaining a separate password for each user., SAML, LDAP, RADIUS, and SCIMSCIMA standard for creating, updating and removing user accounts and groups across applications. It helps an identity provider keep access in sync when people join, change roles or leave. so it can slot into an existing stack without re-architecting. It's aimed at site administrators, application developers, and security engineers who own authentication for an organization. Its own documentation positions the Enterprise version as a replacement for Okta, Auth0, Entra ID, and Ping Identity. Since its first commit in 2018, it has drawn 617 contributors and over 7,000 commits in the past year, with a release as recently as 30 days ago.

authentik is an open-source Identity Provider and SSO platform supporting OAuth2, SAML, LDAP, RADIUS, and SCIM, designed for self-hosting.

How authentik helps

Which application on our network is still asking users for a separate username and password?

connects the app through OAuth2/OIDC, SAML, LDAP, RADIUS, or SCIM so it authenticates against the same central identity instead of its own store

Which of my legacy applications can be brought under single sign-on without being rewritten?

a proxy outpost sits in front of apps that speak none of the standard protocols and handles authentication for them at the network level

Who logged in, to what, and when, over the last week?

the admin interface's event log records logins and authentication events across every connected application on one visual dashboard

Is this user's access still valid, or should it have expired already?

policy, group, and user bindings can carry an expiration date, after which they stop granting access or counting toward a successful policy check

Did revoking someone's account actually end their active sessions everywhere?

deactivating a user terminates all of their sessions immediately and sends back-channel logout requests to connected OAuth2 providers to close out downstream sessions too

Can I find every event where a specific condition held, like a login from a particular country or action type?

the query language searches structured fields across users, groups, and events, so a filter like a country or action name returns just the matching records instead of a raw log dump

Each score is 0–100 on a published rubric, derived from data this site already shows. A dimension we cannot measure says so — it is never scored 0 and never enters a rank.

How this is scored
  • Shipping velocity — releases a month over the last 12 months, on a log scale where 16 a month scores 100. Needs 3 releases in the window.
  • Documentation quality — the release-notes rubric published on the analytics page, unchanged.
  • Breaking-change discipline — the share of releases carrying a breaking change (none scores 100, half or more scores 0). Only projects that label breaking changes are measured: a clean record cannot be told from an unlabelled one.
  • Maintenance risk — quiet time measured against the tool's own release cadence (quiet longer than 90 days and three typical gaps scores 0), plus the number of active maintainers and whether contributors are growing, where known. Higher is lower risk.
  • Innovation & surface — new capabilities in the feature ledger this year, API and MCP operations added, and the share of commits that are features: the mean of whichever we hold.
  • Community health (open-source tools only) — each is a direction, not a size: contributors this year against last, the bus factor now against a year ago, and issues closed per issue opened, where steady scores 50, doubled 100 and halved 0; plus the median time to a maintainer's first reply (an hour scores about 100, a month or more 0). A commercial card has no repository and carries none of the four.
  • Documented delivery (commercial tools) — when a vendor's documented new capabilities have slowed against its own baseline, that counts against the overall standing as heavily as two low dimensions. Steady delivery, or too little history to judge, leaves the standing alone; it is never a sixth score.
  • Open-source tools are scored on repository signals; commercial tools on their published changelog. Ranks compare tools within one category and one profile and need at least five measured peers; the overall standing needs three ranked dimensions. Best-in-breed or consolidator is a shape, not a quality, and is never scored.

Release-note detail over time
