Wireshark is an open-source network traffic analyzer that captures and inspects packets on a live interface or from a saved file, breaking traffic down protocol by protocol for close reading. It runs as a desktop application with a Qt-based graphical interface on Linux, macOS, BSD and Windows, and its distribution also includes TShark, a command-line variant for the same capture and filtering work in a terminal or script. It suits network engineers and SOCSOCA security operations center, the team or function that monitors threats, investigates alerts and coordinates incident response. Its work can be internal, outsourced or shared. analysts who need to see what is actually on the wire when debugging connectivity issues or investigating suspicious traffic, rather than summarized flow data. The category is packet capturepacket captureA packet capture, recorded network packets that can be inspected later. Analysts use it to reconstruct communication and investigate protocol behavior or suspicious traffic. and protocol analysis generally, and Wireshark is the long-standing reference point others in that space get compared against. Its history goes back to 1998, and with over 2,000 contributors and thousands of commits in the past year, it is actively maintained.
Wireshark is a network traffic analyzer, or sniffer, for Linux, macOS, BSD, and Windows that captures and analyzes packets.
NotWireshark isn’t an intrusion detection system. It will not warn you when someone does strange things on your network that they aren’t allowed to do.project docs, unconfirmed · source

DoesCapture live packet data from a network interface.project docs, unconfirmed · source
What is actually going back and forth between this client and that server right now?
captures live packets off an interface and breaks each one down protocol by protocol, so every request, response and flag is visible rather than a summarized flow count
Why did this connection stall or fail to establish?
reconstructs the sequence of packets in a stream and shows retransmissions, resets and handshake failures in the order they happened on the wire
Which host on the network is talking to an address it has no business contacting?
opens a saved capture and lets the source and destination addresses be filtered and listed, exposing traffic that summarized logs would not show
Is this application actually sending what its documentation claims it sends?
filters a capture down to just that application's requests and responses and shows the raw bytes exchanged, not what the client or server library reports
What did the traffic look like at the exact moment this incident happened?
reads a saved capture file frame by frame, so a recording made during an outage or intrusion can be inspected after the fact exactly as it occurred
Can the same investigation be repeated from a script instead of the desktop app?
runs the identical dissection and filtering logic from a command-line variant included in the distribution, producing the same protocol breakdown without the graphical interface

Nine scores for Wireshark, each built from the releases, notes and API history this site tracks — and, on Researcher and Business, where it stands among every measured tool in its category and how that has moved.
Each score is 0–100 on a published rubric, derived from data this site already shows.
A dimension we cannot measure says so — it is never scored 0 and never enters a rank.
How this is scored
Shipping velocity — releases a month over the last 12 months, on a log scale where 16 a month scores 100. Needs 3 releases in the window.
Documentation quality — the release-notes rubric published on the analytics page, unchanged.
Breaking-change discipline — the share of releases carrying a breaking change (none scores 100, half or more scores 0). Only projects that label breaking changes are measured: a clean record cannot be told from an unlabelled one.
Maintenance risk — quiet time measured against the tool's own release cadence (quiet longer than 90 days and three typical gaps scores 0), plus the number of active maintainers and whether contributors are growing, where known. Higher is lower risk.
Innovation & surface — new capabilities in the feature ledger this year, API and MCP operations added, and the share of commits that are features: the mean of whichever we hold.
Community health (open-source tools only) — each is a direction, not a size: contributors this year against last, the bus factor now against a year ago, and issues closed per issue opened, where steady scores 50, doubled 100 and halved 0; plus the median time to a maintainer's first reply (an hour scores about 100, a month or more 0). A commercial card has no repository and carries none of the four.
Documented delivery (commercial tools) — when a vendor's documented new capabilities have slowed against its own baseline, that counts against the overall standing as heavily as two low dimensions. Steady delivery, or too little history to judge, leaves the standing alone; it is never a sixth score.
Open-source tools are scored on repository signals; commercial tools on their published changelog. Ranks compare tools within one category and one profile and need at least five measured peers; the overall standing needs three ranked dimensions. Best-in-breed or consolidator is a shape, not a quality, and is never scored.
Release-note detail over time
See how much detail Wireshark puts in its release notes, quarter by quarter, and compare it with tracked tools in the same category. This history uses up to ten retained, reviewed notes per tool; sparse or blank older quarters may reflect that limit.
