Netresec is a network forensics, packet sniffers and IT security products. Download NetworkMiner and other free software for network security analysis.
NETRESEC is a commercial network forensics and traffic-analysis suite distributed as a set of desktop and command-line tools rather than a single hosted platform, so teams run pieces like NetworkMiner on Windows for packet sniffing and PCAPPCAPA packet capture, recorded network packets that can be inspected later. Analysts use it to reconstruct communication and investigate protocol behavior or suspicious traffic. parsing, CapLoader for sifting large PCAP files into flows, and PolarProxy as a self-hosted TLS inspection proxy, deployable via Docker, systemd, or Kubernetes with config supplied through environment variables. It is aimed at incident responders, malware analysts, and network security monitoring teams rather than general IT staff, and PolarProxy in particular targets those decrypting sandboxed malware traffic. Its own documentation positions tools like CapLoader as feeding into analysts' existing Wireshark or NetworkMiner workflows rather than replacing them. Active since 2010, with 14 tracked releases and the latest only 12 days old, the project is clearly maintained.
Netresec is a network forensics, packet sniffers and IT security products. Download NetworkMiner and other free software for network security analysis.
Which flows in this huge capture actually matter, and how do I get them into a real analyzer?
opens the PCAP as a filterable list of TCP/UDP flows, lets you select the ones of interest, and sends them straight to Wireshark or NetworkMiner with a click, instead of loading the whole capture into a packet-level tool
What is this sandboxed malware sample actually saying once it's inside its TLS session?
PolarProxy sits transparently in front of the sample's connections, decrypts and re-encrypts the TLS, and writes the cleartext to a PCAP file for review afterward
Which hosts, sessions, and files were exchanged on this network without me putting a probe inline?
NetworkMiner passively sniffs live traffic or parses an existing PCAP to surface operating systems, sessions, hostnames, open ports, and reassembled files and certificates
Does this capture contain traffic from a RAT that hides its C2 behind DoH and doesn't use TLS on its command channel?
FlowCarp applies a statistical detection model against the flows in an uploaded PCAP and returns a JSON alert when the traffic matches the RAT's known port-443 non-TLS C2 behavior, flagging DoH lookups to public resolvers as a precursor signal
Which IPs and domains should I be alerting on for a known C2 infrastructure right now?
the vendor's research blog lists confirmed C2 server IPs and associated domains tied to a tracked malware family, usable directly as network indicators of compromise
Can I check a suspicious capture for known malware C2 traffic without installing anything locally?
a hosted demo endpoint accepts a raw PCAP upload and returns a JSON verdict on whether the tracked RAT's traffic is present

Lines in monospace are the tool's own words: help text
parsed from its source, or an endpoint from its API document. Under
release, a line is our summary of a dated release. Under
docs, it is quoted from the tool's own documentation or
website. Each links back to the source it came from.

13 commands for NETRESEC, each
with where it came from. This tool has no source analysis yet, so there
is no option reference and no captured run beside them.

Breaking-change disciplinehow rarely a release breaks users, and notice given
Maintenance riskquiet time against its own cadence, maintainers
Innovation & surfacenew capabilities, API and MCP surface
Five scores for NETRESEC, each built from the releases, notes and API history this site tracks — and, on Researcher and Business, where it stands among every measured tool in its category and how that has moved.
Each score is 0–100 on a published rubric, derived from data this site already shows.
A dimension we cannot measure says so — it is never scored 0 and never enters a rank.
How this is scored
Shipping velocity — releases a month over the last 12 months, on a log scale where 16 a month scores 100. Needs 3 releases in the window.
Documentation quality — the release-notes rubric published on the analytics page, unchanged.
Breaking-change discipline — the share of releases carrying a breaking change (none scores 100, half or more scores 0). Only projects that label breaking changes are measured: a clean record cannot be told from an unlabelled one.
Maintenance risk — quiet time measured against the tool's own release cadence (quiet longer than 90 days and three typical gaps scores 0), plus the number of active maintainers and whether contributors are growing, where known. Higher is lower risk.
Innovation & surface — new capabilities in the feature ledger this year, API and MCP operations added, and the share of commits that are features: the mean of whichever we hold.
Community health (open-source tools only) — each is a direction, not a size: contributors this year against last, the bus factor now against a year ago, and issues closed per issue opened, where steady scores 50, doubled 100 and halved 0; plus the median time to a maintainer's first reply (an hour scores about 100, a month or more 0). A commercial card has no repository and carries none of the four.
Documented delivery (commercial tools) — when a vendor's documented new capabilities have slowed against its own baseline, that counts against the overall standing as heavily as two low dimensions. Steady delivery, or too little history to judge, leaves the standing alone; it is never a sixth score.
Open-source tools are scored on repository signals; commercial tools on their published changelog. Ranks compare tools within one category and one profile and need at least five measured peers; the overall standing needs three ranked dimensions. Best-in-breed or consolidator is a shape, not a quality, and is never scored.
Release-note detail over time
See how much detail NETRESEC puts in its release notes, quarter by quarter, and compare it with tracked tools in the same category. This history uses up to ten retained, reviewed notes per tool; sparse or blank older quarters may reflect that limit.
NETRESEC's home page as it looked each month from August 2021 to October 2026: 12 renders, 0 changes of tagline or palette. Step through them, play them, or put any two months side by side.

Around May 2026 Atlas RAT began using a new variant of its command-and-control (C2) protocol. Earlier versions started with a distinctive byte sequence: 53 46 75 63 6b 00 00 00 In ASCII, that is SFuck followed by three null bytes. The newer traffic starts with BFuck, also followed by three null byte[...]
updatedFlowCarp Atlas RAT detection model updated to cover BFuck variant and TLS C2
With win.atlas_rat
The updated model now includes examples of both variants. Because FlowCarp analyzes more than just the initial check-in sequence, we expect it to reliably detect Atlas RAT traffic even if that sequence changes again.
NetworkMiner now includes a parser for the authentication and authorization protocol RADIUS. The parser extracts usernames, passwords (encrypted or hashed), IP addresses, messages and various RADIUS-specific identifiers.
updatedUMAS parser: Read Physical Address and Write Physical Address command support
With Schneider Modicon PLC
NetworkMiner can now extract data from UMAS commands 'Read Physical Address' and 'Write Physical Address'. This addition enables analysts to determine not only if data stored in memory of a Schneider Modicon PLC has been modified, but also what changed.
In this release we've added support for IEC-104 command ID 60 (C_RC_TA_1) 'Regulating step command with time tag CP56Time2a', which is used to increase or decrease a data-point by one.
With application-layer protocols, malware command-and-control (C2) traffic
FlowCarp can identify both legitimate and malicious protocols, including protocols used for malware command-and-control (C2) traffic. It can also generate alerts and integrate with existing monitoring workflows.
FlowCarp takes a different approach. It identifies application-layer protocols by analyzing statistical characteristics of network traffic and comparing them with models of known protocols. This does not require a formal protocol specification. A protocol model can be created from example traffic, including traffic from a protocol that is difficult to express as a conventional IDS signature. FlowCarp can identify both legitimate and malicious protocols, including protocols used for malware command-and-control (C2) traffic.

How we count
Read from 20 of 48 release notes and docs updates we hold for NETRESEC. "First seen" is the earliest note that names something; "last" is the latest. Our history may start partway through NETRESEC's life, so an old integration can show a recent first-seen date.
Each change counts once: "added 40 checks" is one line, so the numbers measure how often coverage moves, not how big the catalogue is or how well it detects.
