Runlayer

2.4.0 (2026-11-03) commercial

Runlayer is an MCPMCPModel Context Protocol, a standard for connecting AI applications to external tools and data sources. A compatible server exposes capabilities an assistant can use through a common interface. gateway that enforces identity-mapped permissions and detects threats across the agents and MCP servers employees use.

Summary

Runlayer is a commercial MCP gateway that enforces identity-mapped permissions and detects threats across the agents and MCP servers employees use. It runs as a hosted deployment or self-hosted in a customer's own AWS account, with Terraform and Kubernetes support including a dedicated Terraform provider resource for managing agents as infrastructure-as-code. It is built for the platform and security teams who govern AI agent sprawl inside an organization, giving admins audit logs, session monitoring, and policy controls like scan budgets and DPoPDPoPAn IETF standard that binds an OAuth access token to a specific client's cryptographic key pair, so a stolen token cannot be replayed by an attacker who lacks the matching private key.-bound tokens to stop token replay at the proxy. Its documentation describes it as sitting across connectors, skills, and agent deployment rather than as a single-purpose scanner, closer to a control plane for agentic workflows. Launched in 2025, it has shipped 71 tracked releases, most recently 15 days ago.

Runlayer is an MCP gateway that enforces identity-mapped permissions and detects threats across the agents and MCP servers employees use.

How Runlayer helps

Which MCP servers and AI tools are running in the org without anyone having approved them?

scans for unsanctioned agents, MCPs, and skills in use across the org and surfaces them for review before they're brought under policy

Which employees or agents are pulling access to tools they were never granted?

checks each tool invocation against per-identity policy and flags the calls that fall outside what that person or agent's role allows

What is a given agent doing right now, and can it be stopped mid-session?

streams live session activity for monitoring and lets an admin alert on or block a running session in real time

Who has access to which connectors, and how much is each person or team spending?

breaks down usage and spend by person, team, and department, drilling down to individual models

Would a policy change have blocked or approved a request that already happened?

reasons over recorded sessions and audit logs, including agent and run IDs on each tool call, so past activity can be checked against current or proposed rules

Why was a particular access request denied?

attaches an explanation to the rejection so the reason is visible without having to reconstruct it from logs

Lines in monospace are the tool's own words: help text parsed from its source, or an endpoint from its API document. Under release, a line is our summary of a dated release. Under docs, it is quoted from the tool's own documentation or website. Each links back to the source it came from.

18 commands for Runlayer, each with where it came from. This tool has no source analysis yet, so there is no option reference and no captured run beside them.

Score card

  1. Shipping velocity releases a month, last 12 months
  2. Documentation quality release-notes rubric, 0–100
  3. Breaking-change discipline how rarely a release breaks users, and notice given
  4. Maintenance risk quiet time against its own cadence, maintainers
  5. Innovation & surface new capabilities, API and MCP surface

Five scores for Runlayer, each built from the releases, notes and API history this site tracks — and, on Researcher and Business, where it stands among every measured tool in its category and how that has moved.

Score cards are part of every paid plan.

See plans →

Each score is 0–100 on a published rubric, derived from data this site already shows. A dimension we cannot measure says so — it is never scored 0 and never enters a rank.

How this is scored
  • Shipping velocity — releases a month over the last 12 months, on a log scale where 16 a month scores 100. Needs 3 releases in the window.
  • Documentation quality — the release-notes rubric published on the analytics page, unchanged.
  • Breaking-change discipline — the share of releases carrying a breaking change (none scores 100, half or more scores 0). Only projects that label breaking changes are measured: a clean record cannot be told from an unlabelled one.
  • Maintenance risk — quiet time measured against the tool's own release cadence (quiet longer than 90 days and three typical gaps scores 0), plus the number of active maintainers and whether contributors are growing, where known. Higher is lower risk.
  • Innovation & surface — new capabilities in the feature ledger this year, API and MCP operations added, and the share of commits that are features: the mean of whichever we hold.
  • Community health (open-source tools only) — each is a direction, not a size: contributors this year against last, the bus factor now against a year ago, and issues closed per issue opened, where steady scores 50, doubled 100 and halved 0; plus the median time to a maintainer's first reply (an hour scores about 100, a month or more 0). A commercial card has no repository and carries none of the four.
  • Documented delivery (commercial tools) — when a vendor's documented new capabilities have slowed against its own baseline, that counts against the overall standing as heavily as two low dimensions. Steady delivery, or too little history to judge, leaves the standing alone; it is never a sixth score.
  • Open-source tools are scored on repository signals; commercial tools on their published changelog. Ranks compare tools within one category and one profile and need at least five measured peers; the overall standing needs three ranked dimensions. Best-in-breed or consolidator is a shape, not a quality, and is never scored.

    With VSCodium, user-installed agent plugins

updated Shadow AI inventory — GitHub Copilot CLI MCP server discovery

With Agent Plugins mcp.json, Browser Use plugin

Shadow AI inventory for GitHub Copilot CLI : Detect now reads Agent Plugins mcp.json , MCP servers declared in custom-agent frontmatter, and the bundled Computer Use and Browser Use plugins. updated AI Watch Enforce — GitHub Copilot CLI MCP server policy enforcement

With Agent Plugins, plugin-root placeholders, Browser Use plugin, IDE bridge

AI Watch Enforce for GitHub Copilot CLI : The hook now resolves MCP servers the way the Copilot runtime loads them, including Agent Plugins, MCP servers declared by custom agents, plugin-root placeholders, and VS Code workspace and home variables in forwarded VS Code configs, so those calls get a policy decision instead of being blocked as unregistered.

updated AI Watch Enforce — VS Code legacy Local chat harness blocking

AI Watch Enforce in VS Code : MCP calls made from VS Code's legacy Local chat harness are now blocked under Enforce and shown in Shadow AI Activity as an unidentified MCP server, because that harness gives the hook no trustworthy server identity: the tool name carries a prefix the server itself chooses. VS Code's default GitHub Copilot harness is fully supported and gets the normal allow or block decision per server.

Adds Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, MacWhisper, Aqua Voice, Typeless, Monologue, VoiceInk, Whispering and 1 more. 9 in all.

AI Watch Detect : Detect now inventories AI dictation apps, the tools that turn speech into text in any application and read the surrounding on-screen text for context: Wispr Flow , Superwhisper , MacWhisper , Aqua Voice , Typeless , Monologue , VoiceInk , Whispering and Spokenly . They appear as presence-only clients in Shadow AI from their app bundle, uninstall entry, install path, Store package or per-user state directory; Detect never reads audio, transcripts or dictated text.

How we count

Read from 38 of 207 release notes and docs updates we hold for Runlayer. "First seen" is the earliest note that names something; "last" is the latest. Our history may start partway through Runlayer's life, so an old integration can show a recent first-seen date.

Each change counts once: "added 40 checks" is one line, so the numbers measure how often coverage moves, not how big the catalogue is or how well it detects.
